THE REVEREND MARTHA CLARK
Priest-in-Charge of St. Augustine's since October 2007
|
| rector@staugustinesdc.org |
The Reverend Martha Clark spent the first seventeen years of her life as the daughter of Episcopal missionaries in Singapore and the Philippines. She returned to the United States, worked with the Community for Creative Non-Violence in Washington, DC, and graduated from Harvard University in 1981 with a BA in Political Philosophy and Religion.
After several years of teaching and starting her own family, Martha entered seminary at Duke Divinity School, graduating with a Master of Divinity degree in 1992. She was ordained to the Episcopal priesthood, becoming Vicar of a newly formed Hispanic mission church, la Iglesia de San Andres, in Durham, North Carolina. She was the founding Executive Director of The Hispanic Center, a social service community center attached to the church.
In the mid ‘90s, Martha and her family moved overseas, living first in Kenya where she worked with the women clergy in the Diocese of Nairobi. While there she completed a sabbatical year studying African Church History and African Christian Theology at the AnglicanTheological College in Limuru. Moving to Switzerland, she served for four years as the Assistant Priest of Emmanuel Church, Geneva, a member congregation of the Convocation of American Churches in Europe. While in Geneva, Martha worked closely with the Ecumenical Community of English-speaking Churches and the World Council of Churches.

Returning to DC in 2000, Martha served for two years as the Associate Rector at St. Margaret's Episcopal Church in the Dupont Circle area. She has continued to serve in the Diocese of Washington as a supply priest and in Interim Ministry, most recently as Interim Rector of St. Augustine’s in Southwest, DC. At the same time, she pursued another interest: theatre. For three years, Martha worked as Program Manager for Young Playwright's Theatre, an educational theatre company for young people, and then as Backstage Manager for several productions at Imagination Stage in Bethesda, MD. Martha co-produced Jeff Stetson’s award-winning play "The Meeting" and a dramatic reading of the Passion Narrative at the Washington National Cathedral. In September of 2007, she was called by the Vestry of St. Augustine’s to serve as Priest-in-Charge for a three-year term.
Martha is the mother of three sons. Her household includes her Welsh Corgi, Kasey, poodle, Lucy, and two cats, Jinx and Gus. In her downtime, she enjoys a wonderful group of friends, watching movies, yoga, long walks in Rock Creek Park, and visiting family in New Hampshire and California. She would like to learn how to ocean kayak and one day have a beautiful flower garden to tend.

St Augustine's Church Musician, Joyce Bouvier, studied piano from the age of seven in her native New Jersey. She remembers fondly her experience in the Peace Corps in Morocco, when, Christmas 1965, she accompanied "Amahl and the Night Visitors" in that opera's first production on the continent of Africa. In the Washington area, she has been vocal soloist in several churches and has entertained in numerous retirement and nursing homes, singing and playing popular music. A classically trained singer, she appears frequently at St. Augustine's in concerts of the Southwest Chamber Players. |
