Art in the Spirit of Annie King Phillips
.

The Collage Art of Ms Phillips is part of a new show "Mind, Body, Spirit - Celebrating Regional Women Artists" at Univ. of Md. University College Conference Center (Lower Level), 3301 University Blvd. East.  Jan 18 - March 14, 2010. There will be an opening night Artist's Reception January 31, 2010 from 3 - 5 pm.

Annie King Phillips, collage artist extraordinaire, is profiled in the Summer 2008 issue of the Achiever, published three times a year by the University of Maryland University College (UMUC) in Adelphi, MD.

“A Beautiful Life, Acclaimed collage artist Annie King Phillips takes everything life has to offer---and makes of it something beautiful,” by Allan Zackowitz.

The article is an inspired accounting of Annie’s 27 years in Washington, DC’s public education, followed by her many years of focus on improving access to the health care and delivery of services to the city’s poor and uninsured, and her work in reforming the jury selection system.  By age 75, Annie began to create paper collages to take her mind off illness and pain, and today, at age 89, after receiving countless artist’s awards and recognition, her life is described by writer Zackowitz as “reminiscent of one of her own collages, with the many pieces joined just so to tell a story of service and caring that stands as one beautiful and inspiring work of art.”

Annie has been creating her collages for some 14 years, constructing them from fabric and paper.  She spent 27 years devoted to serving youth, particularly those disadvantaged by poverty, as teacher, counselor and mentor.  She admits that
she has had no formal training in the arts and only began to recognize  and develop her magnificent talent while recuperating from illness and pain.  Many of her projects reflect life as she knew it growing up in Washington, DC with her loving family.

In 2009, Ms. Phillips was commissioned to provide the collage art to decorate a restored call box near the home where the Marshalls lived when he was appointed Solicitor General. See pictures of the Call Box unveiling.
