Bishop's Visit 2010 Bishop Chane visits St. Augustines, April 18, 2010
![]() The Right Rev. John Bryson Chane, Episcopal Diocese of Washington, and his wife, Karen spent Sunday, April 18 on their annual visit to S. Augustine's Episcopal Church, 600 M Street, SW. He holds a framed copy of the Thurgood Marshall Call Box art collage presented to him by collage artist Annie King Phillips, a St. Augustine's member, seated left. Mrs. Thurgood "Cissy" Marshall, wife of the late Supreme Court Justice, standing center, smiles her approval. Bishop Chane sponsored a resolution at last year's Episcopal Church's General Convention to "call upon the Standing Commission of Liturgy and Music to add Marshall to the liturgical calendar of this church now," though Marshall's feast day must be formally proposed at the 2012 convention and receive its second approval in 2015's convention. Justice Marshall attended St. Augustine's Episcopal church when he and his family lived in Southwest Washington, DC. Mrs. Marshall still attends and is active on the Altar Guild. Renovated police and call boxes in Southwest are decorated with art reflecting Washington D.C.'s history and culture. The Thurgood Marshall Call box was unveiled and dedicated last May near the Southwest home of the Marshall family.
