This summer, we will close our church building to start the construction phase of the new church here at 600 M. Street, SW.  In early fall, we will bring down this current, 50-year-old structure and begin to build the vibrant new church in its place, scheduled to open in 2016.

During this interim period, we will hold worship services, conduct community activities, and maintain our office hours in temporary locations nearby.  In anticipation of this change, all are invited to the following:

Open House at St. Augustine’s, 600 M Street, SW
Sunday, May 18 from 4 to 6 pm

We will host this event with a program and reception for our Southwest neighbors.  It will be an opportunity to share our transition plans, answer questions, and celebrate our life and history in Southwest DC.

The month of May will be the final month that community programs will be held in the current church space.

Our final worship service in this building is June 8 at 9:30 am.

During the interim period beginning June 15, we will hold our 9:30 am Sunday services in the Fellowship Hall of Christ United Methodist Church at 900 4th Street, SW.

Other services, programs, and events of our congregation will be held in community spaces and private homes.  We will publicize all on our website www.staugustinesdc.org, on our Facebook page, and in The Southwester

During our time away from this 600 M Street location, we will continue to answer our phone at our current number, (202) 554-3222, and will maintain our administrative office at the church rectory at 617 I Street, SW.

We are in the process of obtaining approval of our building design from both the Commission of Fine Arts and the Advisory Neighborhood Commission.  The next CFA meeting is July 19, 2012.  There is also a Zoning Commission meeting on July 23, 2012 at 6:30.

At this time, we are speaking with our contacts at local churches and schools in attempts to find a suitable location to hold worship services while our new church building is being constructed.

Under the present time line, we will be in our current church building through Christmas of 2013.  Our architects at MTFA Architecture, Inc., have been working hard to come up with a great design for the new building.  Here are the most up-to-date renderings of our future church building:

Welcome to the first installment of the Transition Update, brought to you by the Transition Committee. The Transition Committee was formed in late 2011 to assist the congregation in transitioning from our current building to the new building. Our mission is to plan, guide, and address the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of St. Augustine's as we prepare for and move into our new church space. Specifically, the committee will:
  • Locate temporary space to continue worship services, administrative activities, and outreach programs, as well as design a plan for the storage and transfer of church property;
  • Provide transition updates to the congregation and the wider Southwest Community in order to promote transparency, tolerance, and participation in our transition;
  • Maximize the opportunities presented by the transition to explore our identity as a church "without walls," to consider different modes of worship, and to prayerfully maintain a healthy congregation while expanding our footprint within our community.
