Rector Job Description

Founded in the 1960s by visionary worshipers as an intentional multi-racial congregation, St. Augustine’s remains committed to the dreams of its pioneers while evolving with the community it serves. In the legacy of these spiritual leaders of St. A’s, we celebrate and embody diversity in all its forms, with people of different generations, races, sexual identity and orientation, and even spiritual backgrounds sharing worship and community on Sundays and beyond.

Located in Southwest DC, the church and its four-bedroom townhouse rectory sit in the heart of a vibrant and rapidly growing urban community. Within walking distance, one encounters a mix of new developments and long-established homes, luxury apartments and public housing, green spaces and centers of commerce, public schools and professional sports venues. This diverse and dynamic setting offers abundant opportunities for ministry, outreach, and community engagement.

We are seeking a priest that can embrace all of those opportunities, a priest who will help our congregation grow not just in numbers, but also in faith, spiritual depth, and ministry. We hope for an inspiring preacher and a leader who will nurture and strengthen the warm, community-oriented culture of St. Augustine’s while helping us reach beyond our walls through outreach and new ministries. Strong pastoral care is also very important to us, and we aspire to expand this ministry with thoughtfulness and intention.

St. Augustine’s is a church with a rich and living history. For over 30 years, we have served hot breakfast to the Southwest community and worked with the diocese to establish a Saint’s Day honoring Thurgood Marshall, which we celebrate annually. While these ministries reflect our deep commitment to community and social justice, we believe St. A’s has even more to offer, and we seek a priest who will help us build on this foundation, to foster a community where all feel at home, where Christ is recognized in one another, and where God’s love is made visible in both worship and action.
